My struggles of getting started with gardening – getting tools and the process itself

If you’ve been following some of my older blogs, or know me in real life, you probably know that i’ve never been much of a gardener. I like building things – shelves, chairs and other pieces of furniture, but growing plants has never been my passion, until now. I found my hidden passion for taking care of plants after visiting my friend Joe at Napa. His wife had this really wonderful garden of flowers, and it just left me breathless. Although i have a theory that almost everyone is secretly passionate about growing plants and building stuff. It’s what our ancestors did and that’s why it feels so natural and entertaining. Obviously, not everyone agrees with me on this, but i think it makes sense.

 So i had to enrich my set of tools with regular and small showels, trimmers and many other little gadgets. I’ll admit, it wasn’t cheap, but hey, i’m usually pretty conservative with money, and why do you save money if not for spending on your hobbies? Joe’s wife, Lana, also gave me few extra tools she had on the spot, and i want to publicly thank her 🙂

I thought a lot about what kind of garden did i want to build – exclusively flowers, or all plants? And decided to mix them all. I bought some strawberries, tomatoes and cucumbers as well, so i can have fresh vegetables to eat whenever i feel like it. Also, i’ve heard that the fruits you buy at grocery stores are modified to be harvested very efficiently, sacrificing the taste in process. But these ones are different – i made sure to pick only the sweetest strawberries and other top notch seeds i could get my hands on.

 Except for the gardening tools themselves, there was also a task of decorating the interior and outside walls of my garden. I did have some poles and tomato support system set up, which would be accceptable at the beginning, but garden didn’t look any good from outside. I had to pull out my saws, grinders and my lovely pancake compressor (which i finally found good ice auger after 4 months of searching) to give it cleaner look. Unfortunately, i didn’t have camera with me that time, so can’t show off any pictures, but my wife said it looked good, and that was good enough for me. Although i understand that my design needs improvements, and i’m doing my best to source all the materials and tools, as long as my financial situation allows it. It shouldn’t take me more than few months to give it final touch, and that’s when i’ll flood internet with the images.

I don’t get why so many people swoon over cliche tourist cities like Paris or London, when there’s so much to see in eastern europe or outside Europe for much cheaper price. Pictures in front of Eiffel Tower is probably meant to elevate their status in society, but i think that’s just wrong way to live. I think craving other people’s admiration and acceptance is like a drug – getting it only makes you happy for short period of time, but you’ll never have enough of it.

My favorite destinations for this year have been Indonesian islands and Malaysia. Honestly, i’ve been to Indonesia four or five years in a row so far, and i can never get enough of it. The weather, temperature, beaches, jungle and overall atmosphere seems so welcoming to me. There is a problem that it is a bit overcrowded with tourists, but that’s what you should expect when going to really desirable destination. In particular, Bali has it all – mountains and volcanoes, jungles, Budhist temples, beaches. From Bali, you can move on to next island, Lombok, which is just as fantastic. You also have possibility to explore incredible Komodo Island, inhabited by Komodo Dragons, which are these awesome giant-lizard-like creatures indigenous to Komodo island. Denpasar airport is quite accessible as well – there are cheap flights to and from Malaysia and Singapore. Which brings us to next city i want to discuss – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  

 I’ve been to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and have seen best and worst of each one of them. And expected Malaysia to be something similar, but i couldn’t be more wrong. Kuala Lumpur is amazing modern city with great food and streets. The best Pizza i had in south east asia was in Malaysia. Architecture and sightseeing is impressive as well, but what i loved the most is the vibe.

 After Kuala Lumpur, i got back to Bali, and decided to spend my last vacation week in Bali, far away from loudness of the tourists. I stayed in this awesome treehouse here – and it only cost me around 20$ a night. There was four of us, so we split the money and got really nice place for a week. It was so good that it inspired me to build treehouse of my own when i get home – I’m already thinking of getting miter saw!

Cats are one of the most misunderstood animals on planet earth. People who haven’t even been near cat have these terrible stereotypes about them, such as : cats don’t love their owners, they’re self centered, and so on and so on. At very first glance, both of these things might seem true – cats hardly display any sympathy towards strangers, while dogs mostly do. I’ve also observed that cats are very shy, and will not express their love for their owner in front of people. And like a child who tells his parents to stop embarrasing him, they don’t respond to their owner’s signals either. And about being self centered, they might be slightly self absorbed, but that’s natural since they are solitary animals and only depend on themselves when out in the wild. It’s actually fascinating how they get to trust some humans, since most of us aren’t that nice to them. I think i’ve read somewhere that cats are only human pets that could survive on their own if released into the wild. It’s because they never became fully dependent on humans, and that’s one more reason to love them. I think they’re so smart and their intelligence is underestimated as well.

People also underestimate how powerful and agile they are. It’s rare to see both these traits in any animals – the stronger they are, they are equally slow. But not for cats. I wouldn’t have believed it myself if i hadn’t saw my saw bully my 30 kg dog into leaving her alone. And my dog is still afraid of her. Honestly, cat couldn’t scare large dogs such as Doberman, but she knows how to escape damn well too. Her claws are super sharp, in fact, she accidentally gave me really scary cut when we were playing.

One more advantage that cats have over dogs or most pets is that they are easy and cheap to take care of. They are very small, so don’t eat nearly as much as dogs do, so food cost for cats is really low. Training them to not pee on the bed or floor is a little difficult, but they are very smart and learn easily. Don’t use stupid methods that involve violence towards the animal, though. It doesn’t work and you’ll never regain her trust. Search for the tutorials yourself, there are plenty of guides out there to help you through the process. Other than eating and water, cats rarely need anything else. They might get occasional flies and bugs, but there are tons of drops for eradicating that problem. Also one more thing i like about them is that they’re not attention whores, like some dogs are. No offense, i’m a dog owner myself, but sometimes i wish they weren’t expecting so much from me all the time. Cats are pretty independent that way, but if you approach and they trust you, they can also be very playful.
